The Making of Burger Shop

The Making of Burger Shop

In January of 2007, we started work on a prototype of a new game idea, the basic concept was to assemble food items and fill customer orders. The prototype was built with simple graphics and with an eye toward how fun the actual game play would be. We soon decided that we thought the game was solid and began production on what is now Burger Shop.

The prototype wound up with over a hundred levels and all sorts of customers and order types. Originally, we had salad dressings located near the condiments. We also had small sundaes in all three flavors - that was crazy hard!

Burger Shop shined with help from some gaming industry super stars - Heather Perkins created the sound fx and music for Burger Shop. Steve Burke created the main in-game elements and backgrounds. Zack Present and his crew created our main game and map screens. Jeff Bedrick created our lovely and impatient customers and Anita Drieseberg made them move - A big thanks to the entire Burger Shop team!

Screen shot from prototype

This screen shot shows an early level in the prototype. As you can see, many of the objects and their placement remain the same in the final game.

Screen shot from prototype level 100

This shot shows the game at level 100, you can see the salad dressing station to the left. In the end, we decided that adding dressings to salads was too much and left ranch dressing as a condiment.

An early test render

Burger Shop's main game art was created in 3D. The process involves an artist using a 3D program to build models, apply appropriate textures and then render the scene. This is an early test render showing machine placement and early shapes for BurgerTron.
